The Mijas Fair is counting down the hours to kick off six days of festivities in honour of the patron saint of the municipality, the Virgen de la Peña. From September 5th to 10th, the white village will be dressed in colour to host a programme that combines music, traditions and gastronomy for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike.

"Once again, we are about to experience the most special days of our calendar. Because in Mijas, September is named after a woman, our patron saint, the Virgen de la Peña, and we will dedicate six days of celebrations to her, which will reach its peak on the 8th of September, a local public holiday, when our perpetual mayoress will again be taken out in procession through the streets of the village", said the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), who emphasised the "family and open nature of our fair, in which more than 120 nationalities live together and enjoy days of leisure with their families".

For her part, the councillor for Festivities, Tamara Vera (PSOE), stressed that "from the delegation for Festivities we have prepared a programme in which our most deeply-rooted traditions will not be lacking, such as the inflatable bulls, the election of the king and queen, the bicycle route and the chocolate party, the bike route or the chocolate and fritters of the day fair" and wanted to thank Cristóbal Gambero "the emotional proclamation with which we have launched our festivities and the young artist Juanjo Marín from Mijas for his talent painting the poster for this year's Fair".

Inauguration of the lights and Children's Day
The Fair will begin today Tuesday 5th of September with the traditional inauguration of the artistic lighting by the local authorities at 22:00 hours. Meanwhile, on the stage of the Municipal Booth there will be a night of dancing with the students of Juan Jesús Leiva, Víctor Rojas and Remedios Fernández from the 'Universidad Popular' in Mijas. They will be the prelude to the election of the king and queen of the fair.

The youngest members of the family will also experience their most special day this Tuesday with the parade of giants and big-heads, which will tour different parts of the village from 18:30 hours and whose registration will begin one hour before (those families who wish to register can pick up the authorization at the Citizen's Attention office at the Mijas Town Hall). On the same day they will enjoy Children's Day, with the fairground attractions at a reduced price. (2 euros). In addition, the draw for the king and queen in the children's and baby categories is scheduled for the 7th of September in the gardens of La Muralla, where they will also enjoy a fun day with children's activities.

Tribute dinner for the elderly and patron saint procession
On the 6th of September it will be the turn of the seniors of Mijas with their traditional tribute dinner at the Municipal Booth offered by the Council for Pensioners, starting at 21:00 hours. During the dinner, the grandfather and grandmother of the 2023 Fair will be elected through a draw.

And from the night fair to the day fair in the gardens of La Muralla. It will be inaugurated on the 7th of September at 14:00 hours, and groups such as Kalima, A compás, Alejados and Longplay will be performing on stage until Sunday. This enclave will also host the election of the 'marchoso' and 'marchosa' (most fun-loving) or the chocolate and fritters that the 'Fiestas' delegation will offer free of charge to those attending on Sunday 10th of September.

September 8th will be the big day in the village with the festivity in honour of the patron saint of Mijas, the Virgen de la Peña. At 11:30 hours a solemn religious service in her honour is scheduled to take place at the Inmaculada Concepción Church and at 18:30 hours the parade of bands will start from the door of the Town Hall.

At 21:30 hours, the Virgen de la Peña will once again visit the corners of the white village in her procession from the Inmaculada Concepción Church, the key point of the route being her arrival at El Compás, at which time a salve will be sung to the patron saint of Mijas.

Music and traditions
As always, music will play a starring role in this year's fair with concerts at the Municipal Booth. Headlining the musical line-up will be Los Inhumanos ( September 7th), Lérica (September 9th) and José Mercé (September 10th) and there will also be space for local artists such as Salma Díaz. The musical programme will be completed by La Jaula, Adri and Salva from 'La Voz' (The Voice) and Kafé Kanalla. All concerts will be free of charge.

If there is one activity that is capable of entertaining both young and old alike, it is the running of the bulls (Giant inflatable bulls), which will once again set off from the Cañada de Gertrudis on Saturday 9th of September, starting at 19:00 hours. Finally, there will also be the traditional 'pedaleá' (cycling route) around the fair, in which the Festivities Commission and different establishments in the area will be collaborating. A fun bike ride in which many families from the village will take part and which combines sport and nature in its route. Registration to take part will take place on Sunday 10th of September, starting at 10 hours and the start of the route is scheduled for 11.

Finally, from the delegation for Festivities they remind that, as in the previous
fairs, there will be noise-free hours every day in the attractions and rides area (from 19:30 to 21:00) so that children with special needs can enjoy the festivities without noise barriers. They are also encouraging local residents and establishments to decorate their façades and shop windows for the fair. The most beautiful façade and shop window will be acknowledged by the Town Hall during the celebration of the fair.
