The organisation is working on a new initiative, the 'Soroptimist' award, in which it wants to involve businesses in Mijas

Enjoying life, getting out of the heat and having a drink and a bite to eat, that was the objective of the summer party that the group organised on Saturday 12th. "This year has been very busy with different projects", said Daphne Theunissen, president of Soroptimist Costa del Sol.  "We have had our charity dinner after the pandemic, we have developed a workshop with Antonia Nuñez to learn how to make a traditional vegetable garden in Mijas, not forgetting our gender violence programme, helping mainly foreign women", she added.

Soroptimist International is a worldwide women's NGO, with more than 72,000 members in more than 120 countries, with representation at the UN. In Spain it has five clubs, one of them based in Mijas Costa. They work to improve the situation and status of women and girls in general in areas such as equality, education and female leadership.

The head of the Costa del Sol delegation also announced that they are currently preparing the 'Soroptimist' award. "We are looking for companies that work in a more sustainable way. Our target are local organisations, you can visit our website soroptimist.es and see how to apply for this award", explained Theunissen.

For her part, Larysa Blai is a member and a very important pillar of the NGO.  " I always keep a positive attitude, trying to fix the difficulties that arise", she said, adding, "I like this kind of gathering because we also thank all those who work with us for their collaboration. We help female students with scholarships to go abroad and specialise in whatever they need, we collect medicines for other countries and at Christmas we work with Cruz Roja Mijas collecting food. In short, we work to help and improve our humanity".

For the councillor for Equality of the Mijas Town Hall, Natalia Martínez, "the associations are very important in our society. Thanks to their volunteers, who radiate love and kindness and, above all, for the important work they do completely on a non-profit basis. These women are very active and supportive and will always have our backing. With Soroptimist we have continuous help and great assistance and from the Town Hall we want to thank them for their work, especially on the issue of gender violence; we have many foreign women and this NGO helps us in something as important as translation', concluded Martínez.
