Its oldest archive dates back to between 1507 and 1508 and contains numerous documents relating historical events in the town. The Historical Archive of Mijas, located on Avenida de Méjico, will open its window to the past with guided tours, as announced this Monday by the councillor of the branch, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE).
"From now on, residents and visitors will be able to find out how our historical archive works, as we are going to offer guided tours every third Thursday of the month to show our facilities, what kind of documents are kept in our archive and how they can be consulted", said Cruz, who stressed that "99% of the population, except for students of history or professionals who work in this field, do not know the archive, so these guided tours will be very useful to give visibility to the Historical Archive and all its contents".
In this archive you can also consult all the issues of Mijas Semanal since its beginnings.
For her part, the coordinator of the Historical Heritage department, Desirée Piñero, emphasised that this is "a new cultural offer that will give citizens the necessary means to learn about the history of our municipality through the writings and documents found in this archive".
A rich documentary heritage that houses documents relating to important agreements of the Town Hall, records of land products (livestock and fruits) or population registers, "the most consulted", according to the technician of the Historical Archive, Patricia Núñez, " covering from 1637 to 1921, which is what the Data Protection Act allows us, between those dates we can consult all the registers of the town".
The guided tours will take place every third Thursday of the month, from 11 to 12:30 hours, and they will show a couple of documents of each type of document preserved in the Historical Archive, such as chapter minutes, population registers, recruitment records, maps, "although if the user in question has a particular interest in a document or historical event, it can be searched", they add from the department.
Those interested in participating in these guided tours should send an e-mail to archivo@mijas.es with their personal details (name and surname) and telephone number.
