The Guardia Civil, as part of operation 'Coco', has arrested four members of a criminal organisation dedicated to committing robberies using the "cogotero" method. The investigation began at the beginning of July when a complaint was received from a person who stated that he had been assaulted while leaving a bank and that 20,000 euros had been stolen from him in Mijas. The perpetrators selected their victim inside the bank and before he left the premises, they slashed the tyres of his vehicle in order to carry out the robbery.
Following the investigations carried out, the agents were able to ascertain that they were members of an international organisation known as 'Los fantasmas' (The Ghosts), which committed crimes both in Spain and in other European countries. This organisation took numerous security measures to avoid detection, frequently changing vehicles and homes. In one week this organisation had been committing robberies on the Dalmatian Coast (Croatia), Lisbon (Portugal) and Malaga. Four Chilean nationals have been arrested for the crimes of robbery with violence and membership of a criminal organisation, and 11,850 euros in cash and numerous documents that they were carrying at the time of their arrest have been seized. The operation was carried out by members of the Mijas Main Police Station.
