Mijas intensifies the control of dumping on public roads and in container areas

  • As the objective of the local administration is to continue to improve the cleanliness and image of the streets of Mijas
  • Currently there are up to 2.000 containers distributed around Mijas

In the last month, more than fifty reports were issued for uncivic behaviour

With the aim of continuing to improve the cleanliness of the town and the image of the Mijas, the Town Hall has launched a campaign to control dumping and rubbish on the public highway and outside the container areas.

According to the local authority, the current regulations regarding the deposit of rubbish, household goods and all types of waste on the public highway include penalties for the misuse of the containers provided for the deposit of rubbish and waste on the street.

These fines, they explained, could reach 3,000 euros, in the case of very serious offences such as the deposit of toxic, dangerous or special urban waste in containers; or 1,500 euros, in the case of serious offences which would include the dumping of rubbish or waste on the public highway which hinders traffic or creates a health risk, as well as the deposit of household waste or waste similar to urban waste outside the places, containers and bins provided by the Town Hall, among others.

  • Remember rubbish disposal hours in summer: 21:00 to 00:00 h

The agents, especially those assigned to the Plain clothed Unit (SIMA), will ensure compliance with these regulations, thus producing a deterrent effect, not with collection purposes, against uncivic actions that lead to dirt on the streets of Mijas and harm the rest of residents and visitors who do comply daily with the rules regarding the deposit of rubbish and waste.

In the last month, they pointed out, more than fifty reports have already been made for this type of uncivic behaviour.

The Town Hall also announced that it will intensify the information and publicity campaigns that will focus on raising awareness about the correct use of the spaces provided for the collection of all types of waste.

In this regard, the Town Hall recalls that barely a year ago a new contract was awarded for the collection of urban waste (RSU) and the street cleaning service for a period of 10 years, adapting the cleaning work in accordance to the needs of a city that is constantly growing.

Improvements to the service

The improvements include the renewal and expansion of the number of containers to 2,000 units, including the brown container for organic waste; the renewal and expansion of the fleet of vehicles; an increase in the number of staff; an increase in the rate of sweeping, among other aspects, as well as the collection of waste and the removal of pruning waste for cleaning plots or margins, among others.

Finally, the local government at the Mijas Town Hall is asking for the cooperation of the general public and reminds that the timetable for rubbish disposal throughout the municipality during the summer is from 21:00 to 00:00.
