The Cerro del Águila Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) has reduced its electricity consumption by 30 percent, and is expected to reach 42 percent in the near future, as explained on Tuesday by the president of the Association of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol (Mancomunidad), Manuel Cardeña, during his visit to the facilities, accompanied by the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the mayoress of Fuengirola, Ana Mula.

This decrease has been possible thanks to the implementation of up to three improvement measures. The first was the installation of a biological aeration system, which allows the sludge to be pumped and treated using less energy. There is also a new automation system, which optimises the whole process, as well as new photovoltaic panels on the grounds of the treatment plant, which contribute to this reduction in energy consumption. All these improvements have had an overall budget of just over 2.5 million euros, financed by the 'Mancomunidad' of the Costa del Sol and a contribution from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Savings.

According to Cardeña, "these three important improvements that have been made will allow the WWTP to become a sustainable station, with a very low carbon footprint, reducing energy consumption from 5,686 kWh/year to 3,278 kWh/year".

For his part, the mayor of Mijas stressed that the Cerro del Águila WWTP, which serves a part of Mijas, another part of Benalmádena and the entire municipality of Fuengirola, "currently covers about 160,000 inhabitants and can increase its response capacity". In this regard, he pointed out that "it is essential to continue working to improve the water and sewage treatment infrastructures on the Costa del Sol and throughout the province, especially given the drought situation we have been enduring in recent months, and thus allowing us to optimise the available resources. All this, in addition, ensuring sustainable facilities".
