The Environment Department of the Mijas Town Hall would like to thank the citizens for their collaboration in the rescue of an eagle owl in the area of Calahonda beach. At around 8:45 am, some neighbours alerted to the situation in which the bird was found. Although in good condition, the animal, one of the largest birds of prey in Europe and protected because it is in danger of extinction, was exhausted after falling into the sea and taking refuge under the Coastal Path.
Following the citizen alert, a team from the Environment Department was sent to the area, which placed the owl in the hands of the Threatened Species Recovery Centre to be assessed by a veterinarian, who will have to decide whether it should be released in a suitable place or whether it should stay at the centre for a few days to fully recover.
112 is the number to call in the event of such a case.
