Basic Income welcomes 50 new local employees

  • The delegate of Mijas Complementary Services, Laura Moreno, welcomed the new beneficiaries
  • The new incorporations received a risk prevention course on their first day

Mijas Servicios Complementarios has provided assistance to 396 recipients so far in 2023

Mijas Complementary Services (MSC), the municipal company that manages the employment programme 'Renta Básica', has welcomed this Monday, July 3rd, 50 new users who will be working throughout the municipality for six months. The new incorporations have received a risk prevention course, at the Employment Promotion building in Las Lagunas, to face the six months that their contract will last and with which this municipal company seeks to enhance the employability of the people of Mijas.

In this regard, the CEO of MSC, Laura Moreno (PSOE), said during the welcome to the new recruits that "Renta Básica is helping a sector of the population very affected by the crisis, such as women over 45 years old, or the sector of the population formed by men over 55 years old who have great difficulty to join the labour market".

Moreno said that on the 17th of July another 50 people will join the workforce, meaning that in 2023 Renta Básica has so far hired 396 residents who are carrying out numerous jobs in the town: "we are talking about gardening, cleaning, beach and municipal building maintenance", she recalled, while affirming that "during the summer the coast will be given special attention so that it is in perfect condition for our neighbours and visitors".

The Basic Income programme, as Moreno remarked, aims to alleviate the economic situation of families in Mijas with greater needs, while at the same time giving them an opportunity to return to the labour market. Therefore, "if during the development of these six months any of the beneficiaries find another job, because now in summer there are many job offers, and some of them can suit them, we do not hesitate to stop their contract with Basic Income so they can have a chance.

An opportunity is what Amelia Peinado and Rosa Leal want, two MSC beneficiaries who hope that during this time they will get a "good job with good conditions", but that, until that job arrives, "we will work on Basic Income giving the best of ourselves", they said.

Who is eligible for Basic Income?

The manager of MSC, Mariam Mustafa Embarek, recalled that residents who are interested in being part of the Basic Income assistance must be unemployed and have been registered in Mijas for five years out of the last seven years.

"They have to be aware of the opening of calls for applications which are periodically announced and they must present the necessary documentation at the offices of the Employment Promotion building, by register or at the Citizen's Advice Centre", Mustafa explained.
