"The municipality of Mijas is proud of its 93,000 citizens, regardless of who they have relationships with, the people they love or the people they want to share their lives with. Because our motto is and will be Mijas 'Live, feel and love free'", said the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), who presided, together with the councillor for Equality and Diversity of the Mijas Town Hall, Natalia Martínez (PSOE), the institutional act that was held at the gates of the Town Hall on the occasion of the International LGTBI Pride Day.
As every 28th of June, the municipality joins this Day of Vindication, which is celebrated in memory of the revolts that took place in New York in 1969, when a group made up mainly of trans people rebelled against the repression of the time. "In our country this date was established as a national day in 2018 with the aim of recognising the struggle of LGTBI people", according to the manifesto that was read. And "in Mijas the colours of the LGTBI flag are defended today and always", added the councillor for Equality and Diversity.
A vindicating day
Members of the local corporation, employees and neighbours joined in the reading of the manifesto on the occasion of Pride Day. "From the Mijas Town Hall and as mayor we will continue to demand the visibility of sexual diversity in our society. And, above all, we will continue to silence those who want to continue to put at the centre of the political debate something that should be very clear today and that should not give room for arguments that seem to belong to past centuries", added the mayor.
"It is also a day to vindicate how much remains to be done, above all, in terms of respect and tolerance towards the people of the collective, whom we support totally and absolutely. I think it is a day to show the rainbow flag, which is the flag of diversity, the flag in which we all fit without distinction, because it is the flag that gives respect to all people, whoever they are and whoever they love", commented Martínez.
The first deputy mayor, José Carlos Martín (Cs), expressed the same sentiment: "We have to respect everyone's preferences. And I think it is something we have internalised that in Mijas this has been overcome and on days like today what we do is continue to support, continue to visualise and continue to do our bit so that in this society we do not have to celebrate this day because it is something that is already normalised". In addition, Martín thanked "all the collaboration of the different areas of this Town Hall and, above all, all the groups that continue to defend the cause and that on a day like today have come to the doors of the Town Hall to show their support on Pride Day".
For her part, Melisa Ceballos, councillor of the Partido Popular's municipal group, said that "we must vindicate and support this group, as always. From the national Popular Party we join in this celebration and I believe that the reflection we should make today is that we should support each other and not discriminate and, above all, not exercise violence against this group".
"We must also send out a message of vindication so that, once and for all, something that should already be a fully established social advance within our own society is not taken out of the political debate. Unfortunately, to this day there are still political parties that are denialist about the LGTBI situation in our society. Let them explain it to those who have it in their families, to the parents who have a child who is a person who feels and loves freely. And that is something that they have assumed in their own family and that, of course, they should explain it to some of these politicians who are still anchored in prehistory", concluded the mayor.
