At around 15:15 hours a fire broke out in urban land in the area of La Cala Resort. The Mijas Local Police received the alert and sent a unit to this point to regulate traffic and secure it, thus preventing the spread of the fire to neighbouring areas. The officers, after observing how the fire began to spread and due to its size, called the firefighters from Mijas and Fuengirola, Guardia Civil, as well as the resources of the Infoca service.
According to the deputy coordinator of the Bajo Guadalhorce Biogeographical Unit and Environment Agent, Salvador de la Cruz, two fire brigades, a group of forest firemen, an operations technician, an environment agent, a fire engine and two aerial resources worked on the extinguishing operations on behalf of Infoca.
At 17:20 hours, Infoca declared it stabilised, at 18:00 hours it was under control and at 20:00 hours it was extinguished. Approximately one and a half hectares of urban rather than forest land was burnt. The fire has burnt low brush vegetation, a few scattered olive groves and some Aleppo pines and stone pines, but it was mainly a brush fire.
According to Local Police sources, the cause of the fire could be the spark produced by a brush cutter that was being used to clear the affected plot. The police force reminds us of the importance of keeping the plots clean and in good condition, and also insists that in the summer season the use of machinery for forest clearing is not permitted.
