The Medical Union of Malaga (SMM) has denounced that the doctors of the Costa del Sol Health District are facing "a summer without reinforcements" and with a "tired and unmotivated" staff. Faced with the "enormous demand" that "multiplies in the summer season", the group considers "it is essential that the staff are well equipped" and that they have "adequate reinforcements and an appropriate organisation"; so they asked for "more staff to cover holidays", as well as "replacing sick leave and replenishing the staff when a professional leaves". The SMM also called for an immediate call for the directorships of the two Clinical Management Units (CMUs) for emergencies, as well as for provisional appointments to be made for them, since "after more than a year they have still not been called" and "staff are being used without qualifications and with a category that does not match that required". He also raised doubts as to what will be the work of the professionals who are transferred to other centres in the summer when their corresponding centre is closed in the afternoons, and what their working hours will be like.
Response from the Health District
The Costa del Sol Health District recalled that the Andalusian Health Service has authorised the contracting of 5,797 people in Malaga to cover the holidays of health staff, of which 766 correspond to primary care. They also recalled that the number of professionals planned to reinforce the Primary Care centres in coastal areas throughout Andalusia during the summer period is 362, 95.6% more than the previous year.
