If there is a magical place to experience the night of San Juan, it is the beach. In La Cala the celebration had it all to offer: live music, entertainment for the whole family, midnight swims in the sea and, of course, the burning of a 'júa' (Doll). "San Juan is one of our traditional fiestas, I think with more following from those of us who live near the sea. In this case, here in La Cala de Mijas, we are going to burn all the bad omens, both family and work worries... we are going to leave them here, so that this summer and the year ahead will be as good as possible", said the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), who was present at the celebration.
Traditions
But the burning of the júas is not the only tradition around which neighbours and visitors, entire families, gather on the beach of La Cala. "You have to come to the beach, you have to be on the sand, you have to get your feet wet, you have to dance, you have to eat... you have to do it all", said Lázara Barranquero, one of the neighbours who attended the event, while José Félix, another of the residents who came to enjoy San Juan in La Cala, said "you have to go in with your back to the sea, get your feet wet, make three wishes and another is to ask for all possible blessings, write down your wishes on a piece of paper and burn them and well... celebrate".
The spokesperson for the PP in the Mijas Town Hall, Daniel Gómez Teruel, also attended and said "it is one of the most magical nights of the year and we could not miss getting our feet wet, casting all the bad things behind and so that what comes is good".
Just at midnight the fire burned the 'júa' and the bad, while the neighbours approached the shore to let the water bathe their feet and made wishes. With the night of 'San Juan' the summer was officially and festively inaugurated.
