The Contemporary Art Centre in Mijas (CAC Mijas) has been hosting a new exhibition in its halls since Tuesday the 13th. On this occasion, it is a collective exhibition of Finnish artists who are here on holiday for a few days and who fell in love with the CAC one day when they came as visitors. "A gallery from Finland, the Helsinki International Gallery, got in touch with us, they were here on holiday and visited us and we then saw the possibility of bringing this project here which is now a reality, it will only be here for a week because the artists have to leave, but well here it is, we have achieved it and here we have the exhibition", explained the director of the CAC Mijas, Francisco Javier Fructuoso. One of the objectives of the Remedios Medina Foundation, which is in charge of managing this Contemporary Art Centre, located in Calle Málaga in Mijas Pueblo, is to promote new talent with exhibitions like this one, Fructuoso recalled.
"I have a gallery in Finland and now we have come to the CAC Mijas to bring Finnish art to Spain. For several years we have had international exhibitions in Japan and Paris and we wanted to go to more places. My husband and I lived here with our daughter for a year and we got to know Javier and this place with Picasso and Dalí," said the owner of the Eva International Art Gallery in Helsinki, Eeva Kulmala, who said she was "very excited" to have been able to bring this project to Mijas.
A very varied exhibition
The authors of the works on display these days at the CAC were delighted with the experience on the opening day. "It's incredible, it's a dream come true to be able to show our art next to Picasso and Dalí. For me it is something very special. One of my paintings is about transition. It is inspired by a poem by the American poet Mary Oliver and is called 'The lilly'. It refers to the magical moment when night becomes day and the sun kisses the moon and turns the light into different shades of pink and orange but it is still night," said one of the artists, Mikaela Jaanti.
"The name of my piece is 'Unknown Pleasures' from the rock album 'The Joy Divisions'. The technique I use is ultra contrast with black background and white string glued over it, painted with glow-in-the-dark pigment with a light blue tone," commented another author, Arttu Manninen, who also described some of his works on display.
"I exhibit a painting of another Sanna, she is the prime minister of Finland and I wanted to represent women and how she has been treated so far in her current role as a female leader.... It has been an interesting journey", explained artist Sanna Riikonen.
'Following in the footsteps of Dalí and Picasso'.
"The exhibition has been called 'In the footsteps of Dalí and Picasso' and more than because they are works that seek to approach Dalí and Picasso the exhibition brings together works of a wide variety of techniques, ceramics, works made with fabric, acrylics, photographs on glass. The subject matter is also very diverse and colourful. We have tried to group the works by theme, the nature part on the one hand, the figurative part on the other, the latest trends and so on", Fructuoso explained.
One of the most surprising works are some very expressive ceramics. "They are faces made of self-dry clay and are expressions of my emotions, and those felt by the characters in the books I read. They have a soul of their own", explains the author, Livi Johansson.
The exhibition opened on the 13th and will remain open to the public for a week.
