Just hours after the announcement of the governing pact in Mijas between PSOE, Ciudadanos and Por Mi Pueblo en Mijas, the Partido Popular in Málaga informed the press that the PP candidate in the town, Ángel Nozal, has announced his retirement from politics and, therefore, will not take up his post as councillor in the Mijas Town Hall on the 17th of June. However, it has not been revealed whether he will leave his organic post as president of the party in Mijas.
Nozal began his time as councillor in 1983. He became mayor of Mijas with an absolute majority in 2011; since April 2016, he remained in the opposition although his party was the most voted, without an absolute majority, in the elections of 2014 and 2019. Nozal's departure would bring in María Francisca Alarcón, who was number 10 on the PP lists, as councillor.
