Summer has started... meteorologically speaking

  • June kicks off with widespread instability across the country, showers expected in the province this weekend
  • Head of the Mijas weather station, Cristóbal Gambero

We will have to keep our between-season clothes in the wardrobe and have an umbrella at hand, at least for the first few days of June

We are all concerned about how the summer is shaping up, especially after a very dry and warm spring, with just 75 litres collected in Mijas in the last three months, although it was not the driest spring in history. "Especially the months of March and April were quite dry, in fact in April there was no rainfall at all, May has saved us a bit with these late showers", says the head of the Mijas weather station, Cristóbal Gambero. This Mijas resident, a great meteorological enthusiast, reminisces and adds that "if we look back over the history of Mijas we find years like 1977, when nothing more than two litres fell during those three months, or the year 80-odd when only 20 litres fell".

With this panorama at the beginning of June, the meteorological summer has begun, but not the astronomical one. What is the difference? "The meteorological or climatic year is done more for statistics, to fit the whole months together, because in the astronomical summer the seasons vary by a day or two, so to fit these months together, in this case, it is done from June 1st to August 31st (the climatic or meteorological), while the astronomical starts on June 21st until mid-September", explains Gambero.

Another question we ask ourselves is: what kind of weather will we have this weekend, coinciding with the start of summer this June? "Until the 15th the models indicate that there will be instability in practically the whole province, what will that mean? Showers, not downpours, but occasionally heavy showers", says Gambero, who adds that "as far as temperatures are concerned, it is worrying, because the models indicate that it could be a record-breaking summer.  If last year we reached maximum temperatures of 46 and 47 degrees in areas in the centre of the peninsula and the Guadalquivir Valley, this year we will be at the same level, we will reach extreme temperatures".

So now you know, with this forecast, we will have to keep our between-season clothes in the wardrobe and have an umbrella at hand, at least for the first few days of June. For the rest of the summer (meteorological and/or astronomical): cool clothes, plenty of water, a fan, air conditioning and beach or swimming pool, or both.
