Cuevas (Vox): “Subsidised housing is one of the first items to put in the budget”

  • Juan Carlos Cuevas, Vox

He advocates “correcting past mistakes” in urban planning

In the 2019 elections, Vox obtained one councillor in the Town Hall. Now it aspires to obtain greater representation.

Mijas Weekly. You have stated that Vox’s intention is to get two councillors.

Juan Carlos Cuevas. I think it is possible because I am receiving a lot of affection. In 2019 Vox got one councillor, but Carlos Rivero finally became a non-attached councillor.

J.C.C. Yes, he withdrew one month before the elections and then, surprisingly, he picked up his seat, something that caused a bit of a shock.

M.W. What can you tell us about this candidacy?

J.C.C. I wanted to surround myself with a group of people who have a good name, are well known in Mijas and aspire to improve the municipality.

M.W. Tell us about yourself, you are a businessman with activity in Calahonda who is taking the leap into politics.

J.C.C. My business aspirations came to a standstill when I had a stroke. When you recover, you start to see life differently. I don’t need politics to live, but I have always been very involved in running large communities. With that you learn to appreciate the failures and deficiencies on the part of the Town Hall and that is what I want to correct.

M.W. ‘Care for Mijas, take care of what is yours’ is the slogan of the Vox campaign.

J.C.C. Yes. We have to think about what Mijas will be like in 50 years time because we can still build twice as much as we have built so far, but we have to do it wisely and correct the mistakes of the past.

M.W. You propose ten main measures in your electoral programme, among them the improvement of health care.

J.C.C. We are sharing an outpatient clinic with Fuengirola, which is a complete disaster. We are one of the municipalities that contribute most to the GDP of Malaga, to the Junta and to the Central Government and we do not receive the necessary investments and we have to demand them. I can tell you that we are the only municipality that does not have any protection for our beaches and more. I am surprised in Las Lagunas how certain streets have been built without pavements, without adequate parking. That is what I want to correct.

M.W. How can it be corrected if it has already been done?

J.C.C. It can be improved. What is done is done. There are things well done, like Mijas Pueblo, but there are also deficiencies.

M.W. And in the urbanisations, is there a lot to work being done?

J.C.C. A lot. In cleaning, for example. I am beginning to see the Renta Básica helping. That needs to be done better.

M.W. Other points of the programme?

J.C.C. The residence. I do not understand that Mijas does not have a residence and this must be demanded from the Junta. I cannot understand how the ‘Junta’ does not invest in nurseries here. Women work in the afternoons and in our service sectors also at night. Family reconciliation must be sought.

M.W. Would you pact if needed?

J.C.C. It depends on those who accept the red lines that I am going to set out.

M.W. What would they be?

J.C.C. Also to promote the VPO’s, surrounded by a park. That is one of the first things I am going to budget for.
