The international march sets off in Mijas from La Cala Boulevard on Saturday 6th

The Department for Social Services of the Mijas Town Hall and the Association of Relatives and People with Mental Illness of the Costa del Sol (Afesol) presented the ‘Darkness into light’ march on Wednesday 3rd. It will set off before dawn on Saturday 6th of May at six o’clock in the morning from the boulevard in La Cala. “I encourage everyone to sign up, registration is now open and the funds will go both to Afesol and worldwide, as part of these resources are distributed among other European associations working to prevent suicide”, said the councillor for Social Services, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE). Registrations can be made for a symbolic price of 20 euros on the website darknessintolight.com, through Afesol or by calling 952 44 06 64. This solidarity walk takes place every year worldwide, promoted by the Irish Pieta House Foundation, which works on suicide prevention and, according to the vice-president of Afesol, Cristian González, “suicide has become the leading cause of unnatural death worldwide and, at present, both for Afesol and the Pieta House Foundation, as well as for the Mijas Town Hall and different institutions, one of the main concerns is how it is affecting young people, as we are noticing that there are more and more youths who are self-harming and we have to work to prevent it and help them”. “The Mijas Town Hall has a specific project established to combat and prevent suicide in which the Local Police, the Fire Brigade and the staff in the Council for Social Services have been trained, and thanks to it we have managed to prevent four suicides; and also, this year, we have a new collaborative project for the prevention of suicide, bullying, eating disorders and the ingestion of toxic substances within the schools themselves”, added González. This project, which works in a network, will be continued from next year, because, we must remember that, according to estimations, one in four people will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime, ranging from depression to a serious disorder.
