The Viogenex group holds its second yearly meeting

  • Viogenex meeting held last January

The meetings are held quarterly and are intended to address the lines of action to be taken to eliminate gender violence

The Viogenex group, which helps foreign women victims of gender violence in Mijas, held its second meeting in 2023. At the encounter, the work of the last three months was evaluated and lines of action were shared to continue fighting against this type of violence.

The councillor for Foreigners, Arancha López (Cs), explained that “these meetings give us the opportunity to share all the information, if we have had any interventions, how they have been carried out, how they have worked and the situation they are in, and also to follow up on cases that have previously been dealt with, so we are working to ensure that this attention is quick and effective and that we can provide the necessary assistance if a case arises”.

Given the imminent growth of the population in Mijas, with an increasing number of foreign women living here, this working group is necessary to eliminate the lack of information and prevent new cases of gender violence by informing all these women.

This group has been set up specifically to help foreign women victims of gender violence in Mijas, a pioneering initiative in Spain, which came about at the proposal of the Department of Foreigners at the Mijas Town Hall.

The municipality of Mijas has a population of more than 40% of foreign residents and due to the language barrier and lack of information provided to the existing foreign residents about the help and resources available and especially how to act in cases of Gender Violence, the Department for Foreigners presented the proposal and created the Viogenex group, requesting the collaboration of entities, associations and municipal departments linked to the subject.

Currently the components of the following groups and units are part of Viogenex, coordinated by the Department for Foreigners of the Mijas Town Hall: The Guardia Civil in Mijas, the SIMA group of the Local Police in Mijas, Red Cross Mijas, the Councils for Social Welfare and Equality and Diversity and the groups Soroptimist International Costa del Sol and the La Cala de Mijas Lions Club.
