Mijas has now established the dates for its 2023 Book Fair. It will take place from the 27th to the 29th of April, according to the mayor of the municipality, Josele González (PSOE), and the councillor for Libraries, Natalia Martínez (PSOE), who also announced this week that this cultural event will once again be held on the Plaza San Valentín, in Las Lagunas, and will count with the presence of more than thirty authors from Mijas. “These thirty writers will sign their copies in an edition of the Book Fair in which a dozen book presentations of different genres are also planned. For three days, our authors will be able to promote themselves, meet their followers in person and, in turn, give visibility to all the talent we have in Mijas with literature, which is no small feat”, said González, who also announced that the programme includes “a very special encounter between local schoolchildren and Bobby, the first police dog in Spain who is trained to improve reading skills among children through the READ programme”. In this regard, local police officer in Mijas, David Gutiérrez explained that Bobby will soon begin to help children with special needs, motivating them and encouraging them to read, “and it will be a contact with the animal that they will look forward to and expect on a weekly basis, it will be a kind of reward for the reading work they do with their guide or tutor”.
The 2023 Book Fair will have eleven stands, open to the public from 10am to 2pm and from 5pm to 8pm. “In addition to local authors, we will feature the presence of publishers, bookshops and cultural groups, as well as the Malaga Writers’ Association and the ‘Generación Espontánea’ Literary Group,” added Martínez, who stressed that Senior Citizens, as in the last edition, “will also play a leading role in our Book Fair with a literary activity where they will read poetry by local authors, well-known poets and also poems written by themselves”. When speaking about the development of this fair, the local writer Marisi González emphasised that this type of gatherings “allows us to make our books better known, something that is sometimes really difficult, and even allows us to read our own work to all those people who are interested”. Similarly, author Luna Peralta assured that “coming into contact with the public is the most beautiful thing we writers can experience, because we can meet face to face with our readers and get to know their impressions about our work”.
