Mijas sees a 30% increase in visits to the tourist offices during the Easter holidays

  • Numerous visitors filled the village during the processions on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday

The councillor for Tourism states that national tourists accounted for almost 64% of all the visitors

The first deputy mayor and councillor for Tourism at the Mijas Town Hall, José Carlos Martín (Cs), reported on Thursday the 14th the data from the tourist offices of the municipality with regard to the Easter Week holidays, when visits increased by 30%. Therefore, the number of visitors reached 5,415 people and it should be noted that the national tourist again occupies the first position with a total of 2,562 people followed by the British with 997 and the Canadians with 275.

“We continue to grow and this is very positive news because tourism is one of our main sources of income. Within the ranking of nationalities who have visited us this Easter, for the first time tourists from Canada are positioned among the top three, which is a sign for us  that the promotional campaigns we have carried out are reaching North America, as in high season the numbers also increase with regard to American tourists, all of them attracted by the culture, gastronomy and folklore of our land”, added Martín.

In terms of accommodation, the municipality has recorded an average hotel occupancy rate of 77 percent, maintaining last year’s figures. “These figures show that we have already established ourselves in the market after the pandemic, which is great news for our tourism industry. In 2022 we broke our own record for overnight stays in July and August with 90.4% and the start of the season went in the same way, which leads us to be optimistic that we are going to have a good summer in this area”, said the councillor.

The 2023 campaign is focused on rural tourism. “There are several factors that differentiate our municipality from our direct competitors and can be decisive when it comes to rural tourists choosing one location or another, among them, the diversity of the open air offer with the combination of mountain, nature and sea as well as the opportunity to enjoy the silence and calm of sparsely populated areas with all kinds of services available close by”, assured councillor Martín.
