The Department for Operational Services of the Mijas Town Hall is starting work on 12 kilometres of rural roads throughout the municipality. Over a period of two months, work will be carried out on 12 roads, improving and compacting the road surface and borders with a total investment of 30,000 euros. The work has begun on the Las Coscas road and will soon be extended to other rural locations.
The aim is to improve traffic in the area, repair any possible damage caused by rain and make it easier and more comfortable to travel along the rural roads. According to the councillor responsible for the area, José Carlos Martín (Cs), “we are carrying out actions to improve our rural roads. They are not included in the annual shock plan for the improvement of the roads, but are actions outside it on an ad hoc basis, to repair the damage caused by the winter rain. What’s more, we are now taking advantage of the good weather we are enjoying”.
The repair work will be carried out in different areas such as Osunillas and Torreblanca. According to Martín, in Las Coscas “we already have a motor grader, a 19 tonne roller and a water transporting lorry. These are necessary to carry out works on rural roads which include compacting and redefining the roads, and some also need material to be added”.
The work will be carried out between April and May and has a planned investment of 30,000 euros.
Maintenance work on roads in different suburban areas
The absence of rain in April has allowed Operational Services to bring forward maintenance and conservation work on roads in the suburban areas, such as those undertaken on Camino de Los Corralejos, which was in a very deteriorated state and posed certain risks. “It is precisely to provide safety for vehicles travelling through these areas and its proximity to the stream has led to further deterioration of the slope that supports the road and at any given moment, a landslide could cause the entire road to collapse”, explained the councillor for the area, José Carlos Martín (Cs).
The resurfacing work is being carried out along this road, which runs alongside the La Loma stream, a road that is frequently used by the residents of the area.
“What you are seeing today is around 18 cubic metres, but, in total, the repair of the road involves approximately 150 cubic metres of concrete”, he said.
The operators are taking advantage of this work to undertake other improvements, such as the installation of lighting, which is non-existent in this section and, according to Martín, “if there is any type of element that could be improved nearby, such as, in this case, the lighting, we use the opportunity, as we are already deployed here, to do everything and leave nothing out”.
The work will be completed this week and will be followed by similar improvements to Camino de La Colada (La Alquería).
