The Department for the Environment of the Mijas Town Hall presented the prizes for the World Tree Day competition, which this year celebrated its third edition with almost one hundred photographs, all of them dedicated to unique trees in the municipality.
Regarding the contest, the councillor responsible for this department, Arancha López (Cs), stressed that "little by little, it is becoming more important in the municipality", while assuring that "it has been difficult to select the best photographs". The councillor also took the opportunity to thank "all the people who have sent their photos because, through them and through this contest, they have managed to bring these trees to all citizens, which are true jewels of nature in Mijas".
The presentation of these awards took place next to the tree photographed by the winner of the contest, Emilio Gómez, who chose a carob tree located in the rural environment of El Hornillo to participate in the initiative. "The truth is that I had seen several trees previously, but I really loved this one because of its bark and the age-old trunk", explained the author of the photograph, adding that "it is an infrared photograph, in black and white, and I am very pleased that it has been selected, it is a source of great pride".
José Antonio Lavado received the second prize for his photograph entitled 'Holm oak at sunset', "a tree that in the second edition was rarely photographed", he said, noting that "to capture the ideal image I went to the place at different times of the day, playing with the sun, until I found the best moment".
Fernando Torres received third prize with his 'Meditation oak', also located in the El Hornillo area. "It is a tree that you fall in love with just by seeing it on that small hill, with its arms open, you stand at its feet and it invites you to look at the landscape and enjoy its sunsets", said the prize winner, also encouraging the public "to come and see all these trees that we have in Mijas, because they are well worth it".
In this regard, the councillor for the Environment again recalled the purpose of this competition, which is none other than "to continue to promote the environmental heritage of our municipality and the eight routes we have marked to visit each of the trees catalogued in Mijas for their uniqueness".
López also praised Milagros Román, whose photograph entitled 'El paso del tiempo' (The passage of time) was the most voted on social networks, thus winning the prize of the popular jury. Finally, the councillor thanked the company East-West, sponsor of the contest, which awarded the winners with cheques for 200, 100 and 50 euros, respectively, plus another 50 euros for the most voted photo.
