The Mijas Town Hall has converted what used to be an illegal swimming pool into a green zone, a recreational and leisure area for the residents

Where there used to be wasteland and an illegal swimming pool built by the developer of the neighbouring residential properties in a municipal green zone, there is now a recreational and leisure area for the residents of the Loma del Real urbanisation. The Mijas Town Hall, responding to the requests of the different communities in this area, which adjoins the El Lagarejo and El Coto urbanisations, has created a sensorial park with children’s play areas and a sports track.

The park was inaugurated on Friday 31st of March and is now available to all residents of Mijas. “The neighbours were forced to cover their pool because of malpractice by the developer who built a swimming pool in a municipal green area. That, which happened some decades ago, ended up blocking the neighbourhood’s situation and from the Town Hall we have empathised with this problem”, said mayor Josele González (PSOE), who added that “after building the exit bridge to the Mijas road, which was inaugurated at the beginning of the mandate, with the creation of this park we are responding to the people’s demands”.

In this regard, the mayor pointed out that “this is a new area of expansion, where there are young families with very young children, who were asking us to create spaces they could share”.

The residents of the area are delighted with this project that has been carried out, after many years waiting.  “We sat down with the Town Hall to see if something alternative could be done here, we discussed whether we could create a little park, something for the children, as we had nowhere for them to go and play, with a football pitch, and we are very happy”, said Igor Gorostegui, a neighbour in the area.

Teamwork
The government team highlights the work of the Parks and Gardens department, the Operational Services department and the Basic Income staff. “I think that the joint work of many committed people has resulted in this space, which was a commitment of the mayor with this area, as he knew that there were many young people without a place to go to be outside with their children and now it has gone from being an abandoned site to a fantastic place, which will be shared by young and old”, said the councillor for Parks and Gardens, Laura Moreno (PSOE), who ended by saying that “today is a day of celebration”. For his part, the team leader of Mijas Complementary Services, Francisco Javier Criado, said that the park has been designed with some 1,800 plants and 40 different species: “We have created a perimeter path, where there are different structures, textures for children with ASD to experiment the different sensations, and outside the path we also have a line of aromatic plants where we have played with colours, smells and shapes”. “This was wasteland, full of weeds, it had nothing and we started from scratch, we have done everything here, it has made me proud to do this and it seems incredible that it has ended up as it is now, it has been beautiful”, said Basic Income employee María Victoria Bedouret. Finally, the Town Hall stated its thanks for the collaboration of the Berni Gabriel dance groups, who added a musical and artistic touch to the afternoon at La Loma del Real.
