Cala Mijas keeps adding awards to its list. The debut edition of the festival held in Mijas last summer has won the Best New Festival and Best International Live Performance awards for the live performance of Arctic Monkeys at the Iberian Festival Awards, held last Saturday in Oporto.
"The first edition of Cala Mijas continues to bring us satisfaction. After winning the award for Best New Festival at the Fest Awards, it has now added two more awards to its list of wins with the Best New Festival and Best Live Performance at the prestigious Iberian Awards. Undoubtedly, these are a further boost to continue working, with even more enthusiasm if possible, for the second edition, for which we will soon announce new confirmations", says the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE).
For her part, the councillor for Festivities, Tamara Vera (PSOE), is proud of how "a festival that is only a year old is becoming a musical reference within our borders and beyond, taking the name of Mijas to the top of the musical culture. Awards like the ones we are celebrating today are proof that Cala Mijas is not just a passing festival, Cala Mijas is here to stay".
Best New Festival highlights the most innovative and novel festivals and recognises the creativity and originality of the festival, as well as its ability to attract and retain a diverse and demanding audience; while Best Live Performance recognises the best festival performance by an international artist. The award went to the British band Arctic Monkeys, who opened the Cala Mijas festival and its Sonora Mijas venue on the 1st of September 2022.
"Receiving this award, which is granted by public vote, makes us especially excited and shows us that we are doing well. The first edition was a great challenge given the post-pandemic context, so this award has even more value for all the teams. We hope to surpass ourselves in the 2023 edition and offer a festival that lives up to the expectations", adds Eva Castillo, communication director of Cala Mijas.
Other awards
Two awards that add to the triumph of the debut edition of the festival, which together with the previously received award for 'Festival Revelation' by the Fest Awards and its recent entry into the B Corp community encourages the Organization to continue working on Cala Mijas 2023, with dates already announced for the 31st of August, 1st and 2nd of September, and with artists as prominent as Florence + The Machine, The Strokes and Arcade Fire. "A festival that will continue to be committed to a complete, sustainable, original and innovative musical experience", assures the Local Government.
