As every year on March 8th, Mijas joined the vindications marking International Women’s Day. The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the councillor for Equality and Diversity, Natalia Martínez (PSOE), presided over the reading of the institutional manifesto, which was also attended by members of the corporation, trade unions, women’s groups and municipal workers.
“Faced with those who seek to disunite, break and influence with their message, we have to be stronger and show that the population is united to defend real and effective equality between men and women, because that is precisely what feminism is”, said González, who recalled that the “most special activity will be held on Friday the 10th at the Las Lagunas Theatre with the 15th ‘Mijas en Femenino’ gala, where we recognise the work of female figures in our municipality who have stood out for different reasons over the last year”.
A purple banner hung over the balcony of the Mijas Town Hall witnessed the reading of a manifesto “agreed both with the unions represented in this local council and with all the political groups; therefore, it is a text that represents all the citizens of Mijas”, added councillor Martínez, who stressed that the 8th of March is a date to celebrate “but also to continue with the demands, because behind every right, behind every advance, is the feminist struggle, the struggle of women”.

For his part, the first deputy mayor of the Mijas Town Hall, José Carlos Martín (Cs), stressed that “both the public authorities and society in general have to continue working to achieve real equality between women and men, which, unfortunately, is not yet a reality. It is true that we have made progress, but it always falls short”.
On the other hand, the socialist councillor in the government team, Laura Moreno, stressed the importance of “all of us taking to the streets to claim that the wage gap is still out there, that there are many inequalities, that there is a lot of sexism, and also that we are still fighting against a sexist scourge”.
The non-attached councillor, Esperanza Jiménez, pointed out that “we are tired of manifestos, they have wonderful content, very good words, but then, when it comes down to it, they are not implemented”, while Juan Carlos Maldonado, non-attached councillor, stated that he hoped that “through education, through laws, in short, through the whole framework of coexistence, gender violence will be eradicated”.
