Mijas displays its rural and sustainable tourism at the ITB fair in Berlin

  • As at Fitur and the World Travel Market in London, the municipality is promoting this segment in Germany
  • The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (2nd left), and the councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (1st left), have met with the company based in Las Lagunas Sidetours

The aim is to continue to build up the loyalty of German tourists, the third most numerous in Mijas after the Spanish and British

Every year 608,000 Germans arrive at Malaga airport.  Germany is the second largest tourist originating country in the province and the third largest in Mijas, after the Spanish and the British. On the Costa del Sol, the German market generated an economic impact of 861.7 million euros. That is why the presence of our municipality at the ITB, one of the most important tourism fairs in the world, is essential to consolidate the Central European market. Here, as in Fitur and the World Travel Market in London, Mijas is presented under the showcase of rural and sustainable tourism and nature, the hiking routes through the mountains, the typical Andalusian village, gastronomy and crafts. Not in vain, Mijas is introduced in the German capital with the endorsement of being placed in 2021 as one of the 20 preferred rural coastal destinations by users of the accommodation portal clubrural.com.

The Mijas delegation, represented by the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), attended the opening of the fair on Tuesday and visited the Mijas stand in the Andalusia pavilion. The mayor said that "95% of Germans who come on holiday to the Costa del Sol are looking for complementary activities and what better complementary activity than touring the different nature trails that we have in our mountains, investing in a segmented and different way beyond the sun and beach tourism, for other segments in which, of course, in Mijas we are a reference". Martín added "I believe that we have all the characteristics that any tourist is looking for when it comes to this type of attraction, especially the German tourist, which is important for us, as this country is the third most important source of visitors to us".

The climate, said González, is another of the attractions of the Mijas and Costa del Sol destinations. "That is our main asset, in fact, half of the Germans who travel choose their holiday destinations based on the climate and in that, the Costa del Sol and Mijas are in a preferential situation".

The Mijas delegation travelling to Berlin, which in recent years has not held this fair due to the pandemic, has arrived with a marathon ahead of them, a busy work schedule which includes the promotion of our municipality through the media and meetings. "We have meetings with tour operators, such as Sidetours, which is one of those companies that have a lot of power in Germany and is based in Mijas", said Martin, while the mayor stressed that "with more than 100 employees, they themselves manage more than 4,000 direct flights to major German cities such as Frankfurt, Düsseldorf or Berlin itself; that is a positive item for us; in fact, we have already closed some meetings with them.

And while Mijas shines in Berlin, here, assures Martín, everything is already prepared to receive the high tourist season "with the idea that, facing the kick-off of this 2023 season with Easter, we are prepared to receive all those tourists who decide to visit us; I think that we have important expectations for, I think we will exceed, or at least we are working to exceed, the figures we recorded in 2019".
