The Diabetes Group of the Lions Club of La Cala de Mijas held its usual meeting to continue providing information about the disease that every day affects more people, although many are unaware that they suffer from it. The meeting was attended by the councillor for Foreigners, Arancha López (Cs), who exchanged views with members of this group on this problem, "During the visit, several proposals have arisen that have been made to the Department for Foreigners, precisely so that they can have support or make it a little easier for them to get information, to be able to carry out their daily lives in a simpler way", said Lopez. 

At the meeting, blood glucose tests were carried out in order to detect who may be diabetic, and hearing tests were also carried out. The founder of the La Cala Lions Club Diabetes Group, Anne Bowles explained the work of the group, "it was born out of the need for people who were diagnosed with diabetes and didn't know how to act, most of them are English speaking and therefore it was very important to give them all the information on how to lead a healthy life and the guidelines to follow".  The group insists on the importance of diet and exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle and recommends systematic screening to detect the disease in time. 

Diabetes, a global epidemic

An estimated 463 million adults worldwide have diabetes and its prevalence is rising rapidly. By 2045 the number is expected to reach 700 million. Diabetes is a global epidemic that affects everyone. Lions Clubs International (LCI) invites 'Lions everywhere' to fight diabetes by serving their communities, and the La Cala Lions Club is joining in through this group.
