In love with art and always open to continue learning, the well-known American artist, resident in Mijas Pueblo for more than 50 years, Charlotte Gordon, passed away “due to natural causes on January the 29th at the age of 92”, as reported by one of her two sons, Jesse Gordon.
The artist was born in Philadelphia (USA) in 1930. She attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, where she met fellow student and future soul mate Harry Lee Gordon. The two married a few days after graduating, and so remained united until his death, also in Mijas, in 2007.
In 1952, the couple moved to New York, where Charlotte embarked on a successful career as a commercial artist and creative director. She became the first female art director of a major magazine (Seventeen) and created countless album covers for Columbia Records, among many other things. Charlotte had a knack for collaboration and worked with many of the best artists and photographers of the time. Her supportive and community spirit remained to the end.
In 1959 Charlotte and Harry traveled to Spain for the first time and fell in love with the warmth of the people, the beauty of the place and the quality of the clay. Charlotte immediately began working with local potters and reinvented herself as a sculptor.
Although they returned to New York for a time and then to London, where they raised a family, Charlotte and Harry vowed to return to Spain. In 1973 they moved to Mijas and never left again.
Charlotte’s output as an artist was enormous. She exhibited all over Spain. Always open to new things and learning, in Mijas one of the works for which she was best known was the series of photos of San Anton’s Day. This and other activities made Charlotte a well known and respected artist in the municipality, which meant a lot to her. In 2007 she founded Arte Mijas, which she threw herself into for years and which still exists today. Charlotte loved the people of Mijas and the children and, as those who knew her can attest, her religion was art.
Her two sons, Jesse and Benjamin, and her four grandchildren, Samuel, Levi, Cloe and Ariane, declare that “she will be greatly missed”.
