Last Saturday a new workshop started in Mijas to learn how to create a vegetable garden with local and seasonal vegetables and fruit. The Soroptimist International Costa del Sol association is organising this initiative, which includes up to five sessions, all of which will be given by Antonia Núñez, president of the Alegría de la Huerta Andaluza association. As Soroptimist’s president, Dafne Theunissen, explained, the group has again promoted this course after the success of its first edition, with the aim of promoting sustainability and giving nature the importance it deserves. “We have here a mix of people of various nationalities who live in Mijas and want to know what they can plant on their terrace or in their garden, because not everything has to be pretty flowers”, said the president, while one of the participants, Pilar Ortega, added that “in this workshop, as well as learning to grow our own tomatoes and carrots, we also share a good time, enjoying this wonderful environment”. In the first class, the group learned about such fundamental aspects as the correct orientation of the vegetable garden, the components the soil needs, how irrigation should be or what vegetables can be sown now in winter. “Lettuce and chard, or leguminous plants such as beans, which should already be sown, but we have had such a cold few weeks that in the end they have not flourished, although there is still time”, said the head of the workshop, Antonia Núñez, pointing out that “we will soon start with melons, watermelons and fruit plants such as tomatoes, cucumbers and beetroots”. This workshop will be held in the morning on five Saturdays until June, one each month. The Department for Foreigners of the Mijas Town Hall is also collaborating in the promotion of this experience which, for the moment, is attracting a lot of interest, “because we don’t need to have a large area of land to make this type of vegetable garden, With just a little bit of garden or part of a terrace we can have a space to be self-sufficient and feed ourselves in a much healthier way”, concluded the councillor for this department, Arancha López (Cs), who also visited the plot, located next to the Fuengirola-Mijas road, to accompany the participants.
