The urban forest welcomes the planting of 140 new trees and shrubs

  • Calle Doma, near the Mijas racecourse.

The Environment Department and the local company Exploramás are collaborating in this project designed to recover the area's flora

They are to be added to the more than 400 indigenous trees that were already  planted in this natural space located in the vicinity of the Costa del Sol racecourse.
The Mijas urban forest project continues to grow. This morning, the Environment Department and the company Exploramás informed about this new initiative carried out in the urban forest located in Doma Street and in the surroundings of the Costa del Sol Racecourse. On this occasion, both the council and the local company participated in the repopulation and improvement of the environment with the planting of 140 new shrubs and trees. "We continue to work in this urban forest planting oleanders, willows and tamarisk on the banks of the stream", explained the councillor for area, Arancha Lopez (Cs). From the department they assured that it would continue to support "this type of urban forest. Already last year 400 native trees were planted in this area with their subsequent maintenance", added López.
The area has seen an increase in its tree population in addition to those already planted, such as cork oaks, mastic trees and wild olive trees. "This new plantation allows us to attract more biodiversity to this environment, as it is not a question of monoculture, but of being able to alternate other native species to generate a different tree mass that will help to attract more fauna and other types of flora", explained the founding partner and director of Corporate Social Responsibility events at Exploramás, Eva Rosado. According to the company, this is a pioneering project designed to recover the flora species of the area and avoid its urbanisation, turning it into a place for everyone to enjoy.

Benefits and improvements
This is "an urban forest", added the councillor, "which will serve as a reference in the municipality and we will continue to support it in other areas of Mijas. It is essential for all the benefits that urban forests bring", among which we can find the reduction of CO2, the purification and improvement of air quality, noise reduction, temperature regulation, the increase of local biodiversity or the improvement of the physical and mental health of the population of the area.
