Mijas recovers its traditional Carnival

  • The councillor for Fiestas, Tamara Vera, presented the activities included in the Mijas Carnival 2023 |

The festivities begin this weekend in Las Lagunas and La Cala and continue on the 25th and 26th of February

The countdown has begun for the Mijas Carnival, one of the most eagerly awaited festivities in the municipality, which the Festivities Department will organise over the next two weekends, specifically on the 18th and 19th and 25th and 26th of February, with fancy dress contests and parades in the three town centres. According to the councillor for Festivities in Mijas, Tamara Vera (PSOE), “we are on countdown to fully celebrate our carnival in Mijas, a celebration for all our families with all their members, as it is not only for the youngest in the house, but also for parents, grandparents... for everyone”. The Mijas Carnival will begin on Saturday 18th of February, at the Las Lagunas fairground, with the children’s fancy dress contest from 16:30 hours. Those interested in taking part should register from 15:30 hours. “We must remember that registration will always take place one hour before the start of the contests”, stated Vera. This competition will be divided into two categories: ‘baby’, from 2 to 5- year-olds, and children, from 6 to 17-year-olds. “This children’s carnival is designed for the youngest, and they will find bouncy castles and workshops at the Las Lagunas fairground, but adults can also have fun because, in short, what the Mijas carnival is all about is for everyone to enjoy themselves”, said the councillor for Fiestas. The following day, Sunday 19th, the carnival party will move to La Cala with the traditional parade. The procession will start at 11:30 hours in front of the Cultural Centre, although registration will begin at 10:30 hours. The parade will end at La Butimbamba Park, where the fancy dress competition is scheduled to take place.  On this occasion, there will be three categories: ‘baby’ (from 2 to 5-year-olds), children (from 6 to 17-year-olds) and adults (from 18 years of age). In the children’s and adult categories, participants can take part as individuals, in pairs, in groups of up to 10 members or in maxi-groups of 11 to 30 members.

25th and 26th of February

The programme will be completed the following weekend. On Saturday 25th of February there will be a parade and fancy dress contest for adults in Las Lagunas. The parade will depart from Avenida Miguel Hernández (next to the María Zambrano Park) at 16:30, although registration will begin one hour earlier, at 15:30. The procession will arrive at Parque Andalucía, where the fancy dress contest will be held. Finally, on Sunday 26th of February, the Carnival will arrive at Mijas Pueblo with its traditional parade, which will set off from the Town Hall at 11:30 hours. Registration will also begin one hour before, at 10:30 hours. After the parade, the participants will arrive at the Plaza Virgen de la Peña, where the fancy dress contest will take place. The winners of the contests in the three centres will be chosen by a jury and among the gifts will be the following: Nintendo Switch, retro game consoles with more than 3,000 games, weekend packages in rural accommodation with breakfast and dinner included, dinners in local businesses, spa sessions with lunch or dinner included, bicycles and gift cards.
