Little could the financial advisor from Mijas, Javier Castillo, have imagined in 2014 how far he would go after publishing his first novel on Amazon Kindle: ‘El día que se perdió la cordura’ (The day sanity was lost). The sky is the limit, but for Castillo it is even more than that: the now best-selling author (in 2017 he decided to leave his profession as an advisor to embrace his true vocation) has taken a step further in his career and, after impressing Netflix, has premiered a series on the streaming platform: ‘La chica de nieve’ (The Snow Girl), based on his 2020 novel with the same name, on Wednesday 25th. The Albéniz cinema in Málaga hosted the premiere of an audiovisual production that is destined to define the creations that originate in our town.
At only 35 years of age, Castillo shared the stage with the cast of actors who have brought his characters to life: Milena Smit, José Coronado, Aixa Villagrán, Tristán Ulloa, Loreto Mauleón, Julián Villagrán, Raúl Prieto and Cecilia Freire. For the writer, this is “the fulfillment of a dream, especially in light of the great actors in this production”. Moreover, “they are all superb in the adaptation and that is a true gift, because to see that a story that originated in my head is going to be seen in 190 countries, reach 230 million subscribers, and be dubbed into 30 languages is something that blows my mind”.
The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE) attended the event representing all the people of Mijas. The mayor already received the author at the end of 2021, in a meeting in which Castillo signed the Book of Honour at the Town Hall in recognition of his short but brilliant literary career. González, during the premiere, remarked that “it is always an honour to be able to witness great achievements such as that of our neighbour Javier Castillo” and “from Mijas I would like to wish him the best of luck in this new adventure he is embarking on, although I am sure it will be a success among critics and viewers”.
A luxury red carpet
The premiere was prepared with great care and nobody wanted to miss walking along the red carpet that was rolled out along Alcazabilla street, under the watchful eye of ‘La Alcazaba’. The “creme de la creme” of Malaga’s social networks were in attendance, with instagramers, influencers and artists such as Diana Navarro and Pablo Alborán, who were present at the event to support the cast of actors who give life to the characters that emerged from Castillo’s mind, to tell a tough story about a missing person, as actor José Coronado said: “Any case of missing persons is terrible, such as the one that we live in the series, and I think it is one of the most important parts of the plot because it traps the viewer until the end”. The story is set in Malaga, a city that warmly welcomed the filming of Castillo’s novel. In addition to the celebrities who were present, Javier Castillo’s family also attended this important milestone in his career as a creator. Paqui Pajares, his mother, couldn’t be prouder: “I still can’t believe it, I’m amazed at how far Javier is reaching with his stories”. As for the support from Mijas for its distinguished author, Paqui assured that it has been tremendous and that all his neighbours have supported him.
On Friday 27th, Netflix finally releases this thriller in which a journalist investigates the disappearance of a girl during the Three Wise Men’s parade in Malaga in 2010. It is the perfect opportunity to discover, or rediscover, the world born in the imagination of this author from Mijas. “For me it is amazing to see that a story created by me is reaching so far and I hope that the people enjoy it as much as they have enjoyed my books”, said Castillo, who could not hide his satisfaction.
