On Thursday 5th of January their Majesties the Three Wise Men landed at around 16:00 hours at the Las Lagunas sports centre aboard a Civil Guard helicopter. The arrival was eagerly awaited by the children and marked the beginning of the large procession made up of 17 floats, parades and musical entertainment which travelled through the streets of the three centres throughout the afternoon. The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE) and the councillor for Festivities, Tamara Vera (PSOE) were in charge of welcoming the Three Wise Men after they landed at the Juan Gambero Culebra football pitch in Las Lagunas where they were handed the keys to the town so that they could once again flood Mijas with magic, joy and hope. According to the mayor “we are very excited with the arrival of the Three Kings because this procession is a very important part of the night, so we have given them the keys to the city so they can leave gifts for all Mijeños”. González also stressed that “for this procession, the Department for Festivities has made a great deployment in which we have the cooperation of Local Police and Civil Protection to ensure the safety of all, and we can not forget to thank, also, the collaboration of the Civil Guard who has provided us with the helicopter”. On the other hand, councillor Vera said she was “nervous, excited and thrilled to see the joyful faces of the children when they welcome the Three Wise Men. It has been months of hard work but it is worth it for the excitement of being able to help their majesties”. She also recalled: “we have recovered the tradition in our municipality and at last the children, and also the adults, will be able to enjoy collecting the sweets that are tossed from the floats”. More than 200 local children took part in these parades in which over 560,000 soft and gluten-free sweets, worms, balls and cuddly toys were distributed. It was a magical afternoon that ended on the Virgen de la Peña square in Mijas Pueblo, the Butibamba park in La Cala, and the Christmas area in Las Lagunas, where those present tasted hot chocolate and ‘roscón de reyes’, courtesy of the Mijas Town Hall. In addition, a toy per child was presented by the kings. The councillor for Festivities also wanted to thank “all the people involved for their collaboration, both the Local Police, Fire Brigade, Civil Protection, Volunteers and the Civil Guard for their collaboration in making possible the arrival of their Majesties by helicopter to the town”.
