The Town Hall Plenary Meeting on Friday 30th approved two new names for roundabouts in the municipality which will pay tribute to the flamenco singer Juan de La Loma and the golf businessman Mateo Pérez Robles. These roundabouts are located next to Lagar Don Elías (Las Lagunas) and the entrance to the Mijas Golf urbanisation, respectively. According to the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), the proposal to pay tribute to Juan de La Loma, a flamenco singer born in Entrerríos and who died in 1983, came from the flamencologists Sebastián Fuentes and Diego Morilla, and was also supported by the four flamenco peñas (clubs) of the municipality.

They all highlight the career of this ‘mijeño’, who began performing when he was only 9 years old, participating during the rest of his life in numerous flamenco festivals and competitions throughout Andalusia. The motion to name the roundabout after him was supported by the entire municipal corporation. The second name was requested by residents of Mijas Golf and by the family of Mateo Pérez Robles, a businessman from Granada who in the late 60s chose Mijas as his place of residence, subsequently promoting the development of urbanisations such as the aforementioned Mijas Golf and Pueblo Mijitas, as well as the first two golf courses in Mijas in the mid-70s.

 

This item went ahead with the votes in favour of all the groups, except for the non-attached councillor Esperanza Jiménez, who abstained. However, from the PP of Mijas they have asked to differentiate the businessman Mateo Perez with the word ‘don’. “He was an affable man, easy-going, simple, hard-working, but we called him don Mateo, because he always seemed to us to be the eldest and, if there is no objection, we would like him to be called that”, said the spokesman of the Municipal Group of the PP in Mijas Town Hall, Ángel Nozal. In response, the mayor indicated “we will consult with the family”.
