The Soroptimist International association has made a donation to the Red Cross in its special Christmas campaign. 66 families from Mijas will receive a special Christmas hamper thanks to the special contribution by these groups. According to Ander Echebarría, Local Management Technician of the Mijas Red Cross, "we would like to sincerely thank Soroptimist International for their collaboration, which arrives every year. The associations’ work is incredible and we collaborate with them in different projects. In this case, they have donated 1,350 euros to prepare Christmas food packs for families in vulnerable situations, which we manage together with the Food Bank".
This association has mobilised several foreign groups, such as Age Care, The Lions and several companies. Together they offer this aid to local families in need, through the Red Cross and the Food Bank. The initiative has been a tradition for the association for more than 10 years. According to the councillor for Social Services, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), "this association has been working in collaboration with the Town Hall for many years now and has an incredible capacity to join forces. Soroptimist has contacted five groups of foreigners in Mijas and the association acts as coordinator to make sure all the food gets to the Red Cross".
The president of the association, Dafne Theunisse, explained that "Soroptimist in Mijas has 22 members of various nationalities. We work to improve the position of women and children in the world but, at this time of year, we always carry out the Christmas project and we like to help the people of Mijas".
Many volunteers from the Red Cross and Soroptimist together with municipal representatives participated on Tuesday in the elaboration of these hampers that will be distributed before Christmas. For her part, the councillor for Foreigners, Arancha López (Cs), emphasised that she "would like to sincerely thank Soroptimist International for the good work they do year after year at Christmas. I would also like to thank the sponsors and the other associations that have collaborated so that these baskets, these bags of food for the people most in need can be prepared today. It is always at this time of year that we become more supportive".
The Christmas bags include special products such as typical seasonal sweets, jams, coffee and chocolates... although Soroptimist periodically provides fresh fruit and vegetables to complement the Food Bank's aid with these much-needed products.
