Mijas acquires 840 brown containers for its selective waste collection points. These containers are intended for the collection of organic waste for composting. The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the councillor for Street Cleaning, Laura Moreno (PSOE), announced the measure from the cleaning warehouse located at the La Torre Industrial Estate, where the containers are already prepared for distribution on public roads.
This measure "allows the municipality to adapt to the current regulations of Law 7/22 relating to sustainable circular economy by implementing this waste collection that will allow the separation of organic waste that can be converted into compost, bio-waste to be used as fertiliser or as a source of energy, from that which cannot be recycled and which cannot be considered organic", explained the mayor. This task, added González, "has not been easy given the complexity of the municipality, as we are going to incorporate this new container to more than 600 collection points, which will become a reality in the next few days and will place Mijas among the municipalities that are committed to sustainable development and consumption".
As for the installation of these new units, the local government points out that priority will be given to the location of these near markets, areas with a large number of restaurants or in areas with high population density and reminds that "these will be collected daily due to the unpleasant smells caused by this type of waste".
The councillor for Street Cleaning, for her part, valued the importance of the installation of these organic section containers, commonly known, she explained, "as brown bins. When we talk about the organic section, we are talking about waste generated in the home, such as food waste, plants that may die, fruit and vegetable peel... Everything considered food waste in the home". This selection will therefore be "excluded from being deposited in the grey bin that we have been using to date and which will now be destined for waste that is not organic and/or cannot be recycled".
Informative campaign
The local government explained that it will launch an informative campaign "with the aim of reporting and raising awareness about the use of these new containers, not only for children but for citizens in general, because it is up to everyone to make good use of this new resource which, from this week, will be available to everyone and will allow us to continue to grow as a city that cares for its surroundings and environment, especially when we are facing the great challenge of combating climate change and caring for our planet", said Moreno.
With the implementation of this new container, the Town Hall will launch an informative, and awareness-raising campaign to publicise its peculiarities, so that the various containers located at the different selective waste collection points in Mijas can be used properly. Therefore, the Council asks the public to collaborate in order to make correct use of them and move towards a cleaner and more sustainable city.
"Now we are going to have to adapt the municipal waste collection system. We have to establish a new route for the collection of this type of container. Obviously, everything is already organised and prepared for when they are distributed to the more than 600 waste collection points throughout the municipality. What we are now asking for is the collaboration of the citizens, we are also seeking the collaboration of the neighbourhood groups and we are going to see how the installation of these new containers is implemented little by little", González pointed out.
Improvements in terms of cleanliness
According to municipal sources, these containers will be added to the improvements announced by the Town Hall following the concession of the new Street Cleaning and Waste Collection (RSU) contract awarded this year to the company FCC Equal for a period of 10 years, which includes the renovation of the containers with a total of 2,000 units and the introduction of this new container; the renovation and improvement of the machinery and the increase in the number of areas and points to be cleaned, among other aspects.
These renovations in terms of cleanliness can already be seen on the streets of Mijas, where the 950 new vandal-proof rubbish bins with ashtrays, which were presented just a fortnight ago and which include a special 'sanecan' model for pets, are now being installed. All this is also thanks to the construction of a new logistics centre for waste management and street cleaning which, with a strategic location and two 2,373 and 2,567 square metre warehouses, now in use, will enable the provision of a much more efficient service.
