It's Christmas time in Mijas. Last Friday the traditional inauguration of the Christmas lights kicked off the festivities in the municipality which are full of activities for young and old alike. For the first time, the Las Lagunas fairground hosted this inauguration, which included music and gastronomy.
"At this time of year, a lot of attention is paid to detail. Let's not forget that everything we do is, above all, for the youngest members of the family. In order to ensure that families can enjoy themselves and have leisure spaces where they can have fun surrounded by friends, family and neighbours here in Mijas and not have to move to other towns, and I believe that we have achieved precisely that with this space", said the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), during the inauguration of the lighting. Also present was the councillor for ‘Fiestas’, Tamara Vera (PSOE), who said that "we are all very happy because we can see that the hard work we have put in has been worthwhile. Arriving here and seeing the faces of our neighbours and, above all, of the children, makes you forget all the hard work done to prepare everything".
In addition, for the first time, the inauguration was enlivened by a musical performance, in this case, by Las Carlotas. Some attendees, such as the president of the association Nueva Cultura para el Desarrollo, Tamara Soto, said she was "very happy because we have never seen this in Mijas and the truth is that they have done a wonderful job, it is all beautiful". For his part, neighbour Antonio Molino said that "everything is very nice. It is a very good initiative on the part of the Town Hall", which was supported by another Mijeño, Juan Manuel Lavado, who asserted, "I really liked this inauguration". While listening to the concert by the two sisters from Seville, the attendees enjoyed delicious hot chocolate with fritters, courtesy of the Mijas Town Hall, "I really like the fritters, they are very tasty", said one of the youngest attendees, Daniela Morales.
The fairground in Las Lagunas
Things don't stop here, because during this time of year the fairground in Las Lagunas will be hosting something very popular with the locals: an ice rink, among other attractions. Young and old alike will be able to learn how to skate on the ice, enjoy the gastronomic area, buy gifts at the stalls or have fun with the children's entertainment. "In reply to the families who are asking me if we are going to maintain this area throughout the Christmas season, the answer is yes. It is going to be a place where, from now on, different activities will take place, both on stage and in the areas set up", explained Tamara Vera. For his part, the mayor said that "the response from the residents has been incredible. It is a large space, which helps to avoid crowds, it is easy to access, there is parking and it has places where you can enjoy eating Christmas sweets and visit market stalls".
The aim: for everyone to have fun without leaving Mijas. In addition, going to the fairground will also allow us to collaborate with different causes, such as the end-of-year trips by students from Mijas: "This year, after the pandemic, we have been able to recover the trips and since we are preparing ours, which is a bit expensive, we are making handmade products, such as gnomes or candles to sell them here and raise some money", explained one of the students from the IES Villa de Mijas, Eric Moreno. Now there is only one thing to do: enjoy these days with family and friends. "On behalf of the whole government team and, as mayor, I wish all the people of Mijas a happy festive season", concluded Josele González.
