Mijas against male violence on 25N

  • The reading was joined by members of the corporation, representatives of women's associations, social groups and municipal employees |

A manifesto was read in Mijas on 25N

For her part, councillor Martínez stressed that "the only way to give visibility and fight against gender violence is to be united. The administration would be nothing without the backing of the people, which is why this network of women is fundamental, a network of support from all the women's associations in Mijas", adding that 25N "is a day of vindication, of mourning, of remembrance, in memory of all the women victims, but it is also a day of support for all the survivors, trying to re-establish their lives and, of course, also for all the women who today are suffering male violence in their homes so that they can see that they have the support of the women and men of Mijas to get out. It is very important to continue to make demands because it helps other women to decide to take the step. From the Women's Centre we work all year round to provide this public service, direct attention to victims".
"Hopefully one day we will stop talking about this issue because it has ceased to exist, but until that happens we must make this scourge visible and make us all aware of the long road we still have to travel. Public administrations implement plans and projects to help victims and protect them, but each one of us can be agents of change by learning to detect and act when faced with possible situations of abuse. It is very important not to keep quiet and act", said the first deputy mayor, José Carlos Martín (Cs), who stressed that "prevention is essential in this area and how do we achieve it? Well, at the root, through education. From the Town Hall we will continue to provide measures to help and support victims as well as educational programmes in schools and high schools to eradicate these behaviours from childhood in an upbringing based on equality and respect".

The institutional manifesto
The manifesto approved in the last plenary session includes, among other items, increasing the number of staff for psychological care at the municipal women's information centre; increasing and implementing the Budget allocated to carry out the entire Equality Programme and in turn offer the best technical care to women victims of gender violence and their children; implementing the Budget included in the State Pact against Gender Violence allocated to local councils, which this year has been doubled.
Assessments
The spokesman for the PSOE of Mijas, Roy Pérez, stressed that "perhaps today we have to put more emphasis on the message that the fight is not over, there is much to do, the fight against gender violence, male violence, physical, sexual and psychological violence against women continues, so we cannot lose a moment in that fight. I also want to send a message to those parties who do not believe that male violence exists because: from the socialist party, we will not stop using all the necessary means to fight against this scourge, even though they deny it".
Although the manifesto was approved with the vote in favour of all the members of the municipal corporation, the PP councillors and the non-attached councillor, Carlos Rivero, were absent from Friday’s event. Councillors Esperanza Jiménez and Juan Carlos Maldonado were present. The non-attached councillor stressed "they murder us, they kill us and nothing is done. It is time to take to the streets in silence and demand justice for all these women who have been murdered". Maldonado stressed "the importance of working on education so that from the earliest age we teach equality and encourage the implementation of these policies in future generations".
