The installation of more than 30 educational radars that the Mijas Town Hall plans to put into operation throughout the municipality at the beginning of 2023 in the most conflictive points of the town aims, as the Councillor for Transport and Mobility, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE), assured, “to reduce speed, improve safety and give priority to pedestrians or certain vehicles such as bicycles”.

The Local Government in Mijas has chosen Miguel Hernández Avenue in Las Lagunas to install the first of these preventive radars, using them as a pilot project and in view of the imminent start of the works planned to widen Camino de Campanales.

“This is not really the most accident-prone location, but we understand that with the circumstances of the works on Camino de Campanales and taking into account the connection with Avenida de Mijas and Camino de Coín which make it a major road, it is going to have a high density of traffic and we wanted to start here for technical reasons”, said Cruz.

 

How it works

The installation of this new speed measuring device is simple, assured the councillor for Transport. The system works by alerting drivers when they exceed the speed limits set for the road: it changes from green to yellow, if the drivers are close to exceeding the speed limit, or red, if they have exceeded it.

“We want not only to condition the behaviour of some drivers who exceed the speed limit, but also  collect the data that the device will provide, with the frequency that we establish, according to the requirements”, stated councillor Cruz, who also pointed out that general security will be reinforced at this point in Las Lagunas with the installation of other devices such as cameras for traffic control or in locations where waste is deposited, “which form part of the strategy in place to create a cleaner and more orderly Mijas that we all want”.

 

Bollards have also been placed on Avenida Miguel Hernández to improve traffic flow during the works on Camino de Campanales, explained Cruz:. “At one of the most conflictive intersections in the area, these bollards have been placed in order to deter drivers from turning in the opposite direction to prevent traffic jams and dangerous situations due to the fact that almost twice as many vehicles will be passing through this road”.
