The work will stabilise and protect this coastal area of almost 3 kilometres in length

The Beach Stabilisation Project, which is being developed by the Spanish Government through the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, covers 2.8 kilometres of the Mijas coastline between La Cala and El Bombo. The drafting of the project is expected to be completed by 2023 and will be supported by Mijas Town Hall. The mayor, Josele González (PSOE), who visited the area on Monday in the company of the sub-delegate of the Government, Javier Salas, and the councillor for Beaches, José Carlos Martín(Cs), said that "an important and definitive step has been taken to stabilise our beaches here in La Cala de Mijas, which is precisely what we have been advocating from the government team, working hand in hand with the Coastal Demarcation and the Sub-delegation of the Government to reach this point, so I want to thank their commitment and now continue working so that these measures to contain our coastline arrive as soon as possible".
"For years we have witnessed the serious consequences of storms on this stretch of coastline and this announcement supports the argument that we have always put forward from the government team, which is that this type of project cannot be drafted at the municipal level because of its complexity and that the first step had to be taken by the Government of Spain", said González.
For his part, Martín stated that "we have been holding meetings with technicians and public officials from the ministry over the last six years to find a solution to this important problem for our coastline, as the sea is advancing more and more every day. We are talking about a first phase of project drafting, which means that the first step has already been taken to alleviate the horrible consequences of the storms in this area. Even if implementation is still some time away, there is already a serious roadmap for action that evaluates the three alternatives that CEDEX [Centre for Studies & Experimentation for Public Works] put forward last year.
The estimated investment in the work on the Mijas beaches amounts to 2.2 million euros, while the budget for the drafting of the project is 70,000 euros. Salas explained that, "initially, there are already preliminary studies which include a seawall, a breakwater and some other actions such as sand contribution to ensure that these beaches, which are normally dragged from one place to another by the storms from the east and west, are a little more stabilised".
Other projects
The Central Government is promoting stabilisation projects in the province of Malaga "to the value of 30 million euros", added Salas, who recalled "the commitment of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to promote the works for the protection and regeneration of the coastline of the province of Malaga that had been forgotten after two mandates of the PP government without progressing in this area".
Finally, the local government stated that they will continue to work for the conservation, maintenance and enhancement of the Mijas coastline, collaborating with other administrations to continue to position the town as a benchmark of quality, as is already reflected, the government team stresses, "in the various quality certifications obtained over recent years by the municipality, such as Q flags for tourist quality, blue flags or Blue Trail, among others.
