Since Thursday, 10th of November, the 061 emergency assistance base in Mijas is located at the entrance of the Aquamijas water park, replacing the one that was located at the Las Lagunas Health Centre.
The Mijas Town Hall and the Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian Government) have worked hand in hand to maintain this emergency service in the area, assured the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE) on Wednesday. “On the part of the local council we have collaborated extensively so that this provision could be made in a timely manner, and as soon as the works began in Bobadilla street, where until now the 061 base was located, we have finally moved this device next to the water park”, explained the mayor during the inauguration of this new base.
This change of location aims to improve response times to any health emergency that occurs, said the provincial delegate for Health in the Junta de Andalucía, Carlos Bautista, indicating that “the chronos, as we call these timings, will be reduced, even if only by a minute, and with that, we gain a lot, because on the Costa del Sol we have a tremendous amount of traffic and vehicles, and we need our 061 emergency teams to be close to the public to be able to attend to any situation that may arise”.
The Mijas Town Hall has been responsible for fitting out the whole area so that the facilities comply with all health and safety regulations. According to José Carlos Martín (Cs), first deputy mayor of Mijas and councillor for the Operational Services Department, “the pavements and parking area have been extended, as well as the space set aside for ambulances. In addition, new electrical, sewage and water supply installations have been installed, so that this base has all the necessary elements to provide service”. The newly inaugurated facilities are also more comfortable for the staff who work there during their medical shifts.
1,800 medical attendances in 2022
This 061 emergency assistance base, which employs 18 professionals, provides medical coverage for the municipalities of Mijas and Fuengirola, and occasionally Benalmádena. So far this year, the service has attended to more than 1,800 emergencies and health emergencies, most of them life-threatening. In addition, this new base has all the necessary facilities to ensure that the employees and medical staff find themselves in the best condition during their medical shifts, which last 24 hours and involve three medical professionals. The transfer of the facilities to this location in Las Lagunas has not been achieved overnight, but rather is the result of two years of hard work and negotiations. In addition, the local government team in Mijas took advantage of the inauguration of this emergency care base to transfer the pending health improvements in the municipality to the Health Delegate of the Andalusian Government.
