On Sunday 13th the IV Popular Walk "Move against Diabetes" will take place

  • This is an activity organised by the Lions Club of La Cala de Mijas
  • The event was presented on the Torreón de La Cala |

The event is held on the occasion of World Diabetes Day in collaboration with the Mijas Town Hall

The Lions Club of La Cala de Mijas celebrates this Sunday 13th the fourth edition of its well-known Popular Walk ‘Muévete contra la Diabetes’. The event is open to anyone who wants to collaborate to improve the lives of those suffering from this disease and coincides with the upcoming celebration of World Diabetes Day, which is celebrated every 14th of November.

"This is the fourth time that the Lions Club of La Cala de Mijas has organised this activity in which both the Department of Foreigners and the Sports Department of Mijas Town Hall collaborate. It is a very lively activity, in which there will be a walk through several streets of La Cala and then here in the Plaza del Torreón we will be able to enjoy performances, music, information tables, there will also be the Lions Club diabetes group taking glucose levels completely free of charge and it is an activity that aims to give visibility to this disease", said the councillor of the Department of Foreigners, Arancha López (Cs) during the presentation of the event.

The event will take place on the Torreón square in La Cala from half past ten in the morning. "We have a lot of things to do, we will have wrestlers, dancers and children practising fencing. Really, there is a lot going on and you are all invited. Registration is from 10am. You can come for a walk along the path and if it's too far for some, just do what you can and go back. The important thing is to participate", added the club's diabetes group leader Anne Bowles.
"We are very proud to be able to collaborate, to be able to spread the word about this disease, to design the circuits and to be behind the activity, so that, in the end, it is a sporting activity but also linked to health. We are proud to be able to participate, hand in hand with the Lions Club and also with the Department of Foreigners", added the Councillor for Sports of the Mijas Town Hall, Andrés Ruiz (Cs).

Information tables on diabetes, free glucose tests, music, children's workshops, zumba and much more will be organised on Sunday for a day in which sport, health and solidarity go hand in hand. There will also be mediaeval fighting exhibitions as one of the most attractive activities for those who are encouraged to take part, as Samantha Chapman, from the Bohurt Zona Sur Medieval Combat Sports Club, explained. "We're going to be doing an exhibition of duelling, hand and a half, sword and shield, and if we can a bit of 'profight', which is like MMA [mixed martial arts] where anything goes, so we're inviting you all to come along. It's going to be a really fun event, there are going to be massages, we're going to fight and we're going to duel with our armour and our real weapons, so it's going to be a lot of fun, really", Chapman explained.

For a good cause
"From the Foreigners Department we have been collaborating with the Lions Club for several years now and this year we are going to be here once again helping and collaborating and encouraging everyone to participate in this activity. The aim is for us to have a good morning, all together in this lively activity", added López. "I believe that linking health to sport works, medically and scientifically it is proven that sport improves our health and we have to support, through sport, all these people who suffer from a disease such as diabetes", concluded Ruiz.

Various sources estimate that diabetes affects almost 6 million people in Spain. A commitment to a healthy lifestyle is fundamental in the prevention of this disease.
