The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the councillor for Beaches, José Carlos Martín (Cs), welcomed the publication on Monday in the Official State Gazette (BOE) of the tender for the drafting of the stabilisation project to combat erosion on the beaches of La Cala and El Bombo in Mijas by the Government of Spain, through the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco), competent in coastal matters.
This news comes "after the intensification in recent years of meetings between the administration and the Coastal Demarcation to curb the erosion problems that the Mijas coastline has been suffering and especially the area of the beach of La Cala and El Bombo, with the arrival of storms in the area, as happened just a few months ago", says the mayor, who stresses that "this work, which will involve an investment of 2.2 million euros, is essential to preserve our coastline and homes in the area, whose residents were increasingly concerned every day to see the serious consequences of storms in this strip of coastline of about 2.8 kilometres.
The council recalls that the Centre for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (Cedex) of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) prepared in 2020 the 'Study of the behaviour of the beaches of La Cala de Mijas and alternative actions for its improvement', a step, they say "that was necessary to establish what was the best alternative to undertake in the area to stabilise and protect the coastline of Mijas".
In this regard, the councillor for Beaches has highlighted the work done by the local government. "We have been holding meetings with technicians and public officials of the ministry, which is the competent entity to find a solution to this important problem of our coastline, as the sea is advancing every day. We are talking about a second phase of the project drafting, based on the preliminary study already carried out by Cedex, which means continuing with the road map we have already started, to alleviate the consequences of the storms in this area. Although the execution of the works is still some time away, we continue to set milestones".
Therefore, among the various alternatives that will be considered in the drafting of the project, it will include the construction of containment works to build free dykes or breakwaters; the contribution of sand and the recessing of the promenade by a length of about 400 metres, among other options.
Finally, the local government asserts that it will continue to work for the conservation, maintenance and enhancement of the Mijas coastline, working with other administrations to continue positioning the town as a benchmark of quality, "as is already reflected in the various quality certifications obtained in recent years by the municipality, such as Q Flags for tourist quality, Blue Flags or Blue Trail, among others", explains the mayor of Mijas.
