Ceramist, Pepe Almirón, stars in the solidarity calendar promoted by Trade

  • 1.250 Copies have been published in tribute to Pepe Almirón
  • The Town Hall presented the calendar on Friday the 30th with the artisans of Mijas and Pepe Almirón’s family

For the fourth year, the Mijas Town Hall, in collaboration with the Association of Artisans, launches a charity calendar to help Adimi

The Mijas Town Hall’s Department of Commerce has launched, for the fourth year, its traditional charity calendar, once again with the collaboration of the Mijas Craftspersons’ Association. This year, the calendar pays tribute to the ceramist Pepe Almirón, who died unexpectedly eight months ago. As the title states, Almirón “has left his mark” in Mijas, with a legacy of over 30 years. “He is a person we miss greatly, both at the municipal level, as he was an employee at the Town Hall, and in the cultural sphere, because he was involved in many cultural events and his hands have produced true works of art”, said the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), at the presentation of the initiative on the 28th of October. In this regard, Víctor Almirón, Pepe’s son, recalled that “on the streets of Mijas you can see proof that my father left his mark, for example, with all the honorary plaques he made or with that ceramic world map that we see here next to the Plaza Virgen de la Peña”. Published and financed by the Department of Commerce in the Mijas Town Hall, this calendar includes a selection of photographs of Almirón and some of his works, all of which belong to the family.   Pepe Almiron’s wife, Olimpia Casada, recalled a phrase of Pepe’s from Granada: “Estás hasta en los papeles de los churros’, (you even appear on the ‘churro’ wrappers), to refer to someone who is everywhere.  What is for sure is that he will now be seen even more, because he will be in the homes of the families who buy this solidarity calendar, and what greater honour than that”, she commented. The calendar also aims to promote the work of Mijas’ artisans. “In addition to the photos of Almirón, in this new edition we will find a list of the traditional trades that are still maintained in Mijas and the contact details of each craftsman and craftswoman from Mijas, because we must remember that our municipality is the only one in the province declared as an Area of Artisan Interest,” said the councillor for Trade, Natalia Martinez (PSOE). Another of the objectives of this publication is to help, on this occasion, the Mijas Association for the Disabled (Adimi). “Those who wish to purchase a copy of the 1,250 that have been published only have to deliver stationery, as much as they want or can, to any of the libraries in the municipality, to the headquarters of the Association of Artisans of Mijas, located in Pasaje de las Golondrinas, or to Adimi’s Centre itself,” explained the president of the Association of Artisans of Mijas, Sonia Lekuona. The group will distribute these materials “among the early care areas, the residential service, the daycare unit, the occupational workshops... in short, in all the activities that we carry out at Adimi”, concluded Patricia Quero, director of the Adimi Day Care Unit, thanking that “once again Mijas has remembered our association, a gesture that helps us a lot to continue providing our service”. A total of 1,250 calendars have been published and can be found in any of the four libraries, at the headquarters of the Mijas Artisans Association (Puerta del Ágora, Pasaje de las Golondrinas, 8), and at Adimi’s facilities.
