Mijas has an extensive catalogue of unique trees which can be visited through eight different routes and will soon be updated in the Local Government Board to update the new additions or possible removals. In 2021, 16 new specimens were added, and the information soon was updated again.
Now, the Environment Department is renewing the signs on all the trees and routes to update the information. You can check them on the website www.mijas.es.
According to the Environment Councillor, Arancha López (Cs), " it is simple, through these eight routes, we can get to know these unique Mijas trees that deserve to be listed and protected. The new signs, which have already begun to change in routes one and two, will be completed in the rest of the routes in the coming days. It is completely up to date, in English and Spanish, with all the data and a specimen photo".
The uniqueness of the trees lies in their rare representation in the locality. Currently, there are eight routes defined throughout the municipality with these trees. We can find holm oaks, cork oaks, cypresses, walnut trees, medlars, araucarias or dombellas, among others.
To get to know the trees included in this catalogue on site, the Mijas Town Hall offers the following routes: Mijas, Las Lomas, Osunillas, El Hinojal, Las Lagunas, La Cala de Mijas, Entrerríos and Calahonda. These routes can be done on foot, by bicycle or by car, depending on the distance. They are linear or circular.
The signs' renovation is being done little by little, but all the routes will be ready in a few weeks.
Some of these trees are located on private property. The Mijas Town Hall asks people interested to ask for the owners' permission in advance or those in charge of the installations.
According to the Councillor, "it is essential we are aware of the natural surroundings and the environmental Mijas wealth because in this way we can become aware of the importance of preserving it. We have to have good habits when in natural surroundings".
