The aim of this walk was to promote the need for physical exercise to prevent this disease. "Most cancers are not hereditary but are influenced by other environmental factors such as lifestyle, nutrition, physical exercise and pollutants," said the vice president of the AECC in Mijas and Fuengirola, Paloma Gómez. In this regard, the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), who also participated in this walk, insisted that "the best cure is prevention, in addition to scientific and health advances and, therefore, we must collaborate in this type of activities, to continue raising public awareness of this problem".
The Torreón de La Cala square was the meeting point for this healthy activity, which began with a fun Zumba session and continued with the traditional walk along the path. "Today, we have come to accompany the volunteers of the association to spend a beautiful morning with them, without forgetting that this type of activity also helps us to raise awareness of this disease," said the Health Councillor, Candela León (Cs).
In addition to promoting healthy habits among the public, this walk also served to demand more resources for research into breast cancer as, despite its high survival rate, it is still a disease. "Early detection is fundamental, as is the need to monitor the progress of the disease until cured", said the Social Services Councillor, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE). Lourdes Burgos, PP Mijas Councillor, pointed out that "unfortunately, we all have a close case of cancer in our family, hence the importance of continuing research to fight against this disease".
All steps add up
During this healthy walk, we heard testimonies such as that of Inés Palomino, who was diagnosed with breast cancer some years ago. She turned to the AECC to try to find some psychological support. "They helped me a lot, thanks to the association, I got better every day", she said, adding, "we must not forget that all the services provided by this association are free".
But the association needs money and collaboration, such as that offered by Isabel Cortés, a Mijas resident, who took part in this march. "I try to help as much as I can, to be at a volunteer table, buying calendars, and be in this kind of event, which also helps to have a good time with friends", she concluded.
