Town Council and traders assess the second-hand market's new location

Since Sunday, the 9th, the stalls have moved from the San Rafael industrial area to the Las Lagunas fairgrounds

Since Sunday the 9th, the second-hand market is no longer in the San Rafael industrial estate. The Las Lagunas fairground is now its new location after the Mijas Town Hall held a meeting with the traders. It is a space already adapted for street selling on Saturdays, so both the shopkeepers and the town council were happy to set up the Sunday second-hand market from 9 am to 2 pm.

Among other things, the goal was to bring it "closer to the centre of Las Lagunas" in order to increase the visitor numbers, according to the Councillor in charge of the area, Verónica Ensberg (PSOE). "It seems to be a little bit more secluded, closer to the centre, and we hope this new initiative will give a boost," she added.

Apart from the Town Hall, the traders also valued the stalls' relocation. " I think that there is a great atmosphere at the fairgrounds. It seems that one breathes better as there is more space. There, we were in a narrow street with flats and a high building, and here, I feel out in the open air. It is much better. I like it better", said saleswoman Rosario Ruiz. Omar El Kabouss is another stallholder who welcomes the change of location. "It's better here, there are a lot of people, flats... where we were before there were few people". Users are also grateful to have the second-hand market closer to them. Antonio Fernández, a regular at this flea market, said that the fairgrounds are better for him: "I live next door, I used to go there before, but now it's very close... For me, it's great, and the place is suitable".

The second-hand markets are regulated, and their stalls have licence for one year. It is renewable. Currently, 46 stalls are in the new spot, and six licences will be granted this month. They are an opportunity for sellers to earn extra money and for shoppers to pick up bargains. "These markets are good for people who don't have much money as they can buy clothes and all that, here everything is sold cheaper," explained young Ainhoa Martín.
