This week in La Cala de Mijas, a gastronomic event that is more than consolidated in our municipality was presented. It is the traditional 'Rice Week', organised by the El Torreón restaurant celebrating its eighth edition this year. "It is a catering establishment with extensive experience in La Cala that every year, taking advantage of the end of the high tourist season, offers rice lovers this initiative. We support it from the Mijas Town Hall for, as we often say, gastronomy is also one of the main tourist attractions of our municipality," said today the Councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), during the presentation of this culinary event.
Rice Week will run from 31st October to 6th November, offering up to seven different paella dishes. According to the restaurant's head chef, Isaac Montiel, this year, there will be new dishes, including the 'Land and Sea' rice dish Tuesday, 1st November. "We are mixing mountain flavours such as thyme with aromas and products from the sea such as shellfish, clams, and fish".
Besides being a culinary event, the initiative will also have an emotional and human side, as it will pay tribute to two very much loved locals in the sea faring town. The first recognition will be to Pedro Jiménez Huertas on Monday 31st. "Pedro is a person who is very dear to La Cala, and during lunch, we will have a little surprise for him. So I would like to encourage his family and friends to come and join him", said Salvador Gallardo, owner of the restaurant El Torreón.
On Sunday, 6th November, the second tribute will take place. This time it will be to the professional career of Miguel Navarro, who has been dedicated to golf for four decades and now teaches at La Noria Golf. " He has done so much for this sport. It was clear we had to do something for him", continued Gallardo.
It will be, therefore, a day that, according to Manu Sarabia, co-owner of the establishment, "will mix good gastronomy, with the people of La Cala, sport and, of course, tourism, as it is an event that, year after year, also attracts many visitors. I am sure people will have a great time and eat deliciously".
