The municipality investment from Mancomunidad through the Investment Plans is over 1.2 million euros

The Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), next to the Councillor for Beaches, José Carlos Martín (Cs), the Delegate for Investments, Juan Olea, and the President of the Mancomunidad de la Costa del Sol Occidental, José Antonio Mena, have witnessed the handover of a new sieving machine this morning destined for the Mijas Town Council's beach service.

"I believe Mijas Town Council has been one of the great beneficiaries thanks to the joint work of the Town Council and the Mancomunidad. Remember that Mijas is allocated just over one million euros in investments, and a few days ago, we announced the incorporation not only of a tractor for beach maintenance work but of numerous equipment pieces. In this case, we are already preparing for the coming season, such as showers, lifeguard towers, and beach toilets," said the Mijas Councillor. "We would also like to thank Mancomunidad for granting the municipality to meet the equipment needs. A modern sieving machine that fits all the characteristics and has had an investment of about 60,000 euros, adding to the beach equipment that the Mijas municipality has," said the Mijas Beaches Councillor.

This award is part of the money Mijas area will receive from Mancomunidad through the Mancomunados Investment Plans, which totals almost 1,270,000 euros. "The Investment Plan has to be defined. The investments have to be made and justified until 2023. Basically, everything is going at a good pace, work is being carried fast in all the town councils, and we hope that all of them will receive this investment plan one hundred per cent", explained José Antonio Mena, President of the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental (Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol).

Beach cleaning

Specifically, it is a towed sieving machine for beach cleaning and maintenance.  The machine couples to a tractor delivered to the municipality a few days ago. The sieving system consists of a feeder roller with flexible tines that drags the dirty sand to a chain sieve. By a rotating and vibrating movement the sand is sieved.  The waste goes into a deposit, and the machine has a capacity of just under 2 m3. The machine's working capacity is 24,000 m2 per hour, and its cost is 57,112 euros.

"In the end, it is about cleaning all the beaches, which makes all that sand and keeps all those bulky objects: stones, rubbish, etc. It filters the cleaner and thinner sand so that our sand is refined and has no debris," explained Martín. "Let's remember that Mijas beaches have 14 kilometres. Besides, not all are urban beaches, so maintenance and cleaning these areas are complex for the teams in charge of this task. In short, we try to provide them with the best tools available to make their work easier and of better quality, which benefits the cleanliness and, above all, the Mijas beaches, quality certified by these three blue flags and 9 'Q' for quality flags," concluded González.
