The council has already begun work on improving the Mijas coastline equipment for the 2023 tourist season. Among the first measures that have been put in place is the renovation of part of the beach furniture, using a grant of more than 280,000 euros from the Western Costa del Sol Municipalities Association.
Mijas will have five new showers, two adapted showers, two lifeguard and lifeguard modules, a lifeguard tower, four lifeguard and lifeguard chairs, an adapted toilet and three toilets for men and women. "These are services that we have chosen in those places where we have seen a lack or a more specific need and come to complement the material that has been provided by the Town Hall itself," said the Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE) on Monday, 3rd.
The new elements that have been purchased are not only more modern but also more resistant and sustainable, specified the Beaches Councillor, José Carlos Martín (Cs), adding that "they will replace elements that are already used for many years. So we are looking for an improvement in the quality of the materials and their design". The Mijas Councillor also informed that "this new furniture will be placed according to the needs of our coastline", recalling that "we have 14 kilometres of beaches, and all of them quite different".
The Mijas Town Hall has made use of the Investment Plan of the Association of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol, valued at nearly 10 million euros, to make this purchase. This plan subsidies sustainable projects that have an impact on the economic development of the municipalities in the association. "Each municipality has chosen where to spend this money. Some have chosen to improve their parks, others to increase their fleet of vehicles and, in this case, Mijas has chosen to renew its beach furniture," explained José Antonio Mena, President of the Association, who also attended today's presentation on these new elements.
Mijas was allocated an investment of approximately one million euros, and 280,000 euros were used to purchase this equipment. The Mayor of Mijas thanked "the joint work done by the technicians of the Mancomunidad and the Town Hall as, thanks to this, Mijas has become one of the first municipalities to receive the material from the Mancomunado Investment Plan".
New tractor for beach workers
Under this same line of investment, the Mijas Town Council has also purchased a Japanese brand new state-of-the-art tractor for 120,000 euros. " We have a range of machines used in the 14 kilometres of coastline. Some of them are already practically paid off, so it is always good that we renew this fleet of tractors," said the Mijas Councillor. The head of Beaches recalled that "although we have finished the bathing season, we must remember that in the autumn and winter months is when the maintenance tasks are carried out on our beach, all to ensure that the coastline looks in perfect condition next season.
Regarding the new tractor, González also highlighted its "new and improved features will allow us to carry out large-scale work on the beaches and connect sieves, something important, for example when storms hit our coast".
The vehicle was presented early in the morning on the 3rd, in the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol building, arriving at La Cala de Mijas at midday. "We are pleased this tractor will be operational today, which will undoubtedly help the workers in their routine tasks", concluded the Mancomunidad's President.
